Occupational Therapy (OT)

What is a Paediatric OT?

This is a very common question!

Paediatric OTs are registered allied health professionals. OTs work with children and their families to support them in overcoming unique challenges they are experiencing in their everyday lives related to areas of self-care, leisure and productivity.

At Little Fox Children's Therapy,  OTs don’t treat or fix a diagnosis, rather, we work with your child and family to overcome barriers getting in the way of daily life. Most importantly, we want your child to be the happiest and most confident version of themselves.

Our team of experienced OTs are dedicated to helping children reach their full potential and achieve their goals. Our therapists use a variety of evidence-based interventions and strategies to help children develop the skills they need to succeed in daily activities and achieve unique developmental milestones. We recognize that every child is their own self, and may have different sensory and processing needs. Our OTs are trained to understand and accommodate these differences through neurodiversity affirming practice. We focus on building on a child's strengths, interests, and passions to create a positive and engaging therapy experience.

Some of the areas we address through our OT services include:

  • Expanding a child's play skills: E.g. pretend play skills
  • Fine and gross motor skills: Drawing, cutting, craft, outside activities, whole body movement, coordination, balance, ball skills
  • Getting ready to start school: Packing a bag, learning how to get dressed for school, learning to write
  • Sensory processing and adapting the environment
  • Regulation supports: E.g. Helping your child to self-settle and supporting family to manage big feelings
  • Visual motor skills: Needed for reading, writing, drawing and playing
  • Handwriting: E.g. Pre-writing and drawing skills, learning to identify letters, correctly forming letters
  • Self-care: E.g. Toileting, getting dressed, brushing hair and teeth, bathing, sleep, family mealtimes, home routines
  • Social-emotional development: E.g. Helping your child to connect with other friends and develop a positive self-identity
  • Executive function skills: Supporting child to build attention skills, initiate, plan and follow through with learning tasks
  • Family well-being: Supporting the whole family unit surrounding the child

At Little Fox Children's Therapy, we believe that family-centered care is essential to a child's success. We encourage parents to be actively involved in their child's therapy sessions and provide them with resources and support to continue their child's progress at home.
